Semi-auto Firearm Ban Coming To Colorado?

On January 4, 2023, Rocky Mountain Gun Owners broke the news: “The newly minted Gun Violence Prevention Caucus has announced their intention to expand Red Flag laws, raise the age of possession to 21, and reduce private property rights. Still, what they haven’t officially announced is the most worrying of all: the “Mass Shooting Prevention Act of 2023.” The rumor has since been confirmed by multiple Colorado Congress members. So here is the skinny…

What is “Mass Shooting Prevention Act of 2023“?

To summarize:

  1. Ban on manufacturing, possessing, or transferring an “assault weapon.”
  2. Updated definition of “Assault Weapon,” which includes nearly all semi-auto firearms.
  3. Grandfather clause: Gun owner must surrender his/her firearms to peace officer(s) unless he/she can prove ownership before the ban date upon request at any given time.
  4. July 1, 2023, is the effective date.
