Colorado Gun Laws:
2025 Was Bad.
2026 Is Lining Up to Be Worse.

If you thought Colorado lawmakers were done “fixing” the Second Amendment in 2025, think again. Last year laid the groundwork. 2026 is shaping up to pour concrete over it.

What we’re watching is not a one-off bill here or there — it’s a pattern: more permits, more fees, more paperwork, more people empowered to disarm you… all while criminals continue doing whatever they want.

Let’s break it down.

WHAT 2025 DID (And Why You’ll Feel It in 2026)

These laws passed in 2025 but take effect in 2026, coming up…

Semi-Auto Purchase Permit Scheme
Think expensive, time consuming, long lines and gun registration for the most common semi-auto firearms.Effective August 1, 2026

Ammo Age Restriction to 21
All ammo purchases restricted to 21+ and ALL AMMO must be secured behind counters in retail stores.

Gun Show Crackdown
Excessive fees, security mandates, more paperwork and shifting liability to the suppliers = Less Gun Shows, High Costs and LESS access to the public.

NOW, WHAT’S COMING IN 2026 (AND WHY IT’S WORSE)

SB26-004 — Expands who can file “red flag” (ERPO) petitions…
Would broaden petitioners beyond current categories to include certain co-responders (like behavioral health crisis responders), district attorneys, institutions of higher education, and in some cases a child’s legal guardian when specific conditions are met.

SB26-043 — Adds restrictions on “firearm barrels”
Creates new rules around sales/transfer of firearm barrels—including requirements like in-person transactions, age limits, recordkeeping for 5 years, and huge penalties for violations.

HB26-1126 — Tightens state dealer requirements
Clarifies that a state dealer permit is required to transfer firearms; expands compliance obligations to “responsible persons” controlling a dealer; extends “employee” rules to contractors; increases possible fines (up to $100,000 for repeat violations of certain requirements); expands recordkeeping beyond pistols/revolvers to most firearms; adds security/storage/reporting requirements. In short, let’s make it as expensive as possible to be a licensed dealer or gun owner.

THE REALITY CHECK
Let’s be honest:

  • None of this targets criminals
  • All of it targets compliance
  • Every step adds friction, cost, and delay for lawful ownership

Colorado isn’t regulating crime — it’s regulating behavior.

THE BOTTOM LINE

  • 2025 built the trap
  • 2026 tightens it
  • Law-abiding gun owners pay more, wait longer, and jump through hoops
  • Criminals remain unaffected
  • And legislators will call it “progress”
  • More and more local gun stores will shut their doors.

If this trajectory continues, Colorado will become one of the most restrictive states for lawful gun ownership — not because of violence statistics, but because of politics. Stay informed. Stay loud. And don’t wait until the rules are finalized to start caring.
