Why It’s Time for Our Local Leaders to Speak Up

SB25-003, the sweeping new gun control bill in Colorado, is drawing fire — not just from gun owners, but from within the law enforcement community itself. Though not all have gone public, many sheriffs across Colorado are calling this bill unenforceable behind closed doors. The reasons are clear:

• It would effectively criminalize most semi-automatic firearms, including common sporting and home defense rifles.

• It imposes extreme liability and insurance requirements that could cripple small gun shops, forcing many to shut their doors.

• It places law enforcement officers in the impossible position of enforcing laws they know are unconstitutional and dangerously divisive.

These sheriffs are in a tough spot — caught between state mandates and the communities they’ve sworn to protect. Many have signaled privately that they will not enforce unconstitutional provisions, similar to what happened with Colorado’s red flag laws years ago.

But here’s the problem: silence equals consent.

It’s time for county commissioners and sheriffs to take a public stand. Coloradans deserve to know where their elected lawmen stand — not just after the lawsuits are filed, but now, when the public needs leadership the most.
