Yes, You can legally own a machine gun.
Machineguns have become great investments as many have doubled in value in the last few years. There are few exceptions, but you are qualified to own a machinegun in most states as long as you can pass a background check to own a firearm.
- In May of 1986, The Firearms Owner’s Protection Act was passed to ban the manufacturing, importing, and transferring of new machine guns to US Citizens. This leaves roughly 200,000 “pre-May” legal machineguns that are transferable.
A simple supply and demand equation has steadily increased the value as the supply of “legal” machineguns is fixed or decreasing while demand increases. For example, a transferable Mac 10 has gone from $3000 to $10,000 in asking price in the past few years. See how one man got rich by selling machine guns.
As more restrictive gun control bills are expected, the market of transferable machine guns will keep increasing in the future.

For over 90 years, the rules have stayed more or less the same. You must be a US Citizen who is in good standing and is over 21 years old. You may use your local Federal Firearm Licensee (FFL) holder, i.e. a gun store with a Special Occupational Tax (SOT). A transfer can cost between $100 and $200. All private citizens buying transferable machineguns must do the following:
Step 1. File ATF Form 4 (paper and efile version)
Step 2. Pay the $200 transfer fee by check or through pay.gov
Step 3. Wait at the mercy of ATF
Some special cases include Curio & Relic machineguns (any firearms that are 50 years or older) and inheritance to an heir within the same state ( form 5) require no $200 tax.
As of May of 2022, the efile wait time is a matter of a couple of months.
