The U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to hear challenges to so-called “assault weapon” bans from Illinois and Connecticut. The outcome could have a nationwide impact on the legality of AR-15s and other commonly owned semiautomatic rifles.

While this does not change any laws today, it is shaping up to be one of the most significant Second Amendment cases since the Bruen decision. Oral arguments are expected during the Court’s next term, with a ruling anticipated in 2027.

Also this week, the U.S. Department of Justice filed lawsuits challenging new firearm restrictions in California and Virginia, arguing they violate the Second Amendment.
