Local gun laws are changing again — here’s what we’re seeing

Colorado Gun Law Update + Ammo Talk

What We’re Seeing in the Shop
If you’ve stopped by the shop lately, you’ve probably noticed something:
Things have been real busy.

Phones ringing. People asking questions. Inventory moving faster than usual. And a lot of the same conversations happening over and over again.

Most of it boils down to two topics:

  1. Upcoming gun laws in Colorado
  2. Rumors about ammo supply getting tight again
  3. Washington DC appeal court struck down MAGAZINE LIMIT

Colorado Gun Bills Currently in Consideration (2026 Session)

Colorado lawmakers are currently debating several firearm-related bills during the 2026 legislative session. Most bills passed during the regular session take effect in mid-August 2026 unless lawmakers attach a “safety clause.” (Colorado General Assembly)

Here is the skinny….

1. SB26-004 — Expansion of the Red Flag Law
What it does:
Expands who can request an Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO), allowing institutions such as health-care facilities, behavioral health facilities, K-12 schools, and universities to petition courts to temporarily remove firearms from someone deemed a risk. (Colorado General Assembly)

Status:
Passed the Colorado Senate and is moving through the House during the 2026 session. (FastDemocracy)

Likely implementation:
If it becomes law without a safety clause, it would likely take effect August 2026, when most new laws take effect after the legislative session.

2. SB26-043 — Regulation of Firearm Barrels
What it does:
Would regulate the sale of firearm barrels, likely requiring in-person transfers through licensed dealers and record-keeping requirements.

Status:
Under consideration in the legislature.

Likely implementation:
If passed, it would likely take effect August 2026 (standard implementation timeline).

3. HB26-1144 — 3D-Printed / “Ghost Gun” Restrictions
What it does:
Expands restrictions on unserialized firearms, 3-D printed guns, and certain parts or digital manufacturing instructions.

Status:
Under legislative review.

Likely implementation:
Likely August 2026 if enacted.

4. HB26-1126 — Firearms Dealer Regulation
What it does:
Adds additional compliance requirements, security rules, and potential fines for firearms dealers operating in Colorado. This bill is designed to increase cost of doing business in Colorado.

Status:
Currently moving through committees.

Likely implementation:
Expected mid-to-late 2026 if enacted.

5. SB25-003 — Semi-Automatic Firearm Training & Permit Requirement
(This bill already passed in 2025 but is still the biggest upcoming change.)

What it does:
Requires buyers of certain semiautomatic firearms to:

Obtain a Firearms Safety Course Eligibility Card from the sheriff (No Time Limit, No Cost Estimate)

Complete a state-approved training course (No Class Format, No Cost Estimate)

Pass a written exam before purchase

Implementation date:
August 1, 2026

Colorado currently has multiple firearm bills being debated, but the largest change already scheduled is the semi-automatic firearm purchase system under SB25-003, which begins August 2026. Most new legislation passed this year would likely follow a similar timeline and take effect later in 2026.

What We’re Seeing at Damage Factory

Whenever major firearm regulations are approaching, people tend to pay attention. And that’s exactly what we’re seeing right now. Many customers who were already planning to buy something are simply deciding not to wait until the process becomes more complicated.
The most popular platforms this month have been:

AR-15 rifles and pistols (5.56 and .300 Blackout)
AK pattern rifles including Zastava and Bulgarian imports
Stripped lowers from BCM, Battle Arms, and others
9mm and 5.56mm Ammo

In other words… pretty normal stuff that people already like to own and shoot. The difference is timing.

And Then There’s the Ammo Rumor Mill

Now let’s talk about the other thing we keep hearing about: ammo. There’s been a lot of chatter online lately claiming “ammo is drying up nationwide.” It is true that a lot of wholesalers are sold out of the most common 9mm FMJ for the last 2 weeks. No official words yet, but there are a few real factors that could tighten supply and push prices around:

• Raw material shortages affecting powder and primers
• Increased global military demand for ammunition production
• Manufacturers announcing upcoming price increases
• And of course… people buying more when they think something might happen.

If you’ve been around long enough, you know how this cycle works. Sometimes supply actually tightens. Sometimes people simply buy faster than stores can restock.Either way, it tends to create the same result: empty shelves for a while.

Magazine Limit Struck Down in D.C.

Magazine limits just took a hit in Washington, D.C., where a court recently ruled that bans on magazines over 10 rounds violate the Second Amendment because they are in common use. For now, the decision only applies to D.C., so Colorado’s 15-round limit stays in place. But rulings like this could influence future legal challenges to magazine bans across the country — including here in Colorado. As always, we’ll keep doing what we’ve always done:
Bringing in the inventory people actually want, answering questions when we can, and helping folks stay informed about what’s going on here in Colorado.

And if you happen to stop by the shop, don’t worry — the coffee is still bad and the gun talk is still free.
