A federal judge in Illinois recently issued an injunction against that state’s sweeping semiautomatic firearm ban—known as the Protect Illinois Communities Act (PICA). Judge Stephen McGlynn ruled the law unconstitutional under the Second Amendment. But here’s the catch: it took nearly two years of appeals before the injunction was even granted. In that time, Illinois gun stores and distributors were gutted. Entire product lines were pulled from shelves, sales dried up, and customers fled to neighboring states. By the time the courts stepped in, much of the firearms market in Illinois had already been destroyed.

This slow-motion damage is exactly why Colorado gun owners should pay attention. Our own SB003 sets up a mandatory permit and licensing system for semi-automatic firearms, mirroring the same type of overreach Illinois tried. Even if Colorado’s law is ultimately struck down in court, the years-long wait for injunctions and appeals could permanently cripple local gun shops and shrink the firearms market here.

The Illinois fight is a preview of what’s ahead for Colorado:

• Delayed Justice = Market Collapse – Gun stores can’t survive years of uncertainty while appeals drag on.

• Common Arms Under Attack – Semi-automatic rifles and magazines are widely owned and constitutionally protected, but still subject to bans (Ahem… subject to PERMIT that’s impossible to obtain.)

• Colorado Next? – SB003 could wreak the same havoc unless challenged immediately.

The lesson is clear: even when bans are defeated in the courts, the damage to small businesses and the Second Amendment community can already be done. Colorado gun owners can’t afford to wait two years for relief.
